Windows Home Server

Windows Home Server Information, tips and tricks!

I have an old desktop lying around. I thought it would be cool to transform it to a server for my home. What should I do within XP for it to be a server? I mean what are the settings I have to do for it to become a server so that every computer in my home will connect to it.

XP is not a server Operating System and it will not do what you are asking it to do. It is like asking wnat you need to do to turn your car into an airplane.
You could load Windows Server 208 on the XP machine in place of XP.

Any version of XP can be used as a File server.
Set up shares and apply permissions to the folders.
Browse to them via UNC path from another machine.
Startrun from another machine and enter \hostshare
Where “host” is your file servers name and then the share name.
You can also install TVersity witch is a fantastic media server software.

XP is not a server OS. You need Windows Server or perhaps a copy of Linux would work.
It’s also worth noting that there are many, many different kinds of servers (web server, e-mail server, file server, media server, etc).
